A Snap Shot of Murwillumbah.

Murwillumbah meaning "place of many possums".

Murwillumbah, the town branded affectionately as the “Heart of the Tweed” is perfectly positioned in the heart of the magnificent Tweed Valley, just 30mins South of Coolangatta/Tweed Heads, 20 mins West of the Tweed Coast and30 mins North from popular Byron Bay.

Murwillumbah is a picturesque town that spreads along the western bank of the Tweed River and up into the hills of the Tweed Valley.

Surrounded, as it is, by the rim of the world's largest extinct shield volcano and bordering the Tweed River, almost every street has magnificent mountain, river and valley views.
As well as being the gateway to five of Australia's World Heritage listed National Parks, Murwillumbah is home to the World Heritage Rainforest Centre - a visitor information centre which also houses a National Parks and Wildlife Service office. The magnificent Mt Warning is the core of the ancient Caldera and it towers over the township of Murwillumbah like a prehistoric guardian.

Recently Murwillumbah was named the 9th most desirable place to live in Australia, this was based on a number of factors some of them being natural beauty, property values, welcoming locals and good infrastructure.

Murwillumbah is a place where the lifestyle is relaxed and informal, the people friendly and welcoming and a perfect place to stop for lunch on your tour of the region. You can choose from one of the many al fresco cafés and restaurants in town, or maybe you'd prefer to dine at one of the several pubs and clubs. Whichever you choose, your meal is bound to include fresh, local produce as well as a friendly chat on the best places to visit during your stay.

Surrounding Murwillumbah in a 15min drive radius are the satellite villages of Uki, Chillingham, Tyalgum, Tumbulgum, Burringbar and Stokers Siding for you to explore. All of these villages are brimming with their own unique charm and personalities, each offering a different and rewarding experience.

Quite simply Murwillumbah has it all. Ideal location, climate and a relaxed lifestyle all qualities which are much sought after by tourists, investors and people who appreciate the ambiance of the Valley.

Many of the buildings are Art Deco in style and there are plenty of good cafes, art galleries, boutiques and unique gift shops to explore. A diverse range of people coexist peacefully and celebrate each year with the Tweed Banana Festival, the second oldest festival in Australia.

The town itself has a lot to offer; from some of the best examples of Art Deco architecture to be found anywhere in the country to the award winning Tweed River Art Gallery. The Tweed Valley actually boasts the highest number of artists per capita than any other shire in Australia. It would seem that creative individuals are inherently drawn to the picturesque Tweed Valley because of its natural beauty.

The Treasures of the Tweed mural is a beautiful show of the creativity in Murwillumbah.  The mural is located along the concrete flood mitigation wall on the western side of the Tweed River bank on Commercial Road, Murwillumbah, adjacent to the Murwillumbah RSL Club.
